Robert Poe
Robert Poe was a missionary who spent some years in China. He was centrally involved in local efforts to have the City of Riverside support the Chinatown archaeological excavation in the 1980s and the construction of the Chinese Pavilion. His headstone, all in Chinese, reads:
This nice city and this sad headstone.
His love renews itself forever.
His writing was innovative, sophisticated, comprehensive and insightful.
He was a public speaker, gave scholarly presentations, and appreciated the beauty of nature.
He devoted his body to his race, and helped his friends and families.
Our friendship is harder than gold and stone.
I remember him forever.
And the inscription above reads (from right to left):
The year 1985
This stone remembers Professor Robert Poe
Built by his families and friends from both China and the U.S.
