Site Authors
Unless otherwise noted, the materials on this site were organized and written by Deborah Wong. Wong is Professor of Music at the University of California, Riverside, where she teaches ethnomusicology and world music. She was Director of the Center for Asian Pacific America at UCR from 1997-2002. She is the author of Speak It Louder: Asian Americans Making Music, a book on Asian American performance and cultural politics (Routledge, 2004). She is a member of the Association for Asian American Studies and the Association for Asian Studies, and has long been interested in Asian American history. Wong is a third- and fourth-generation Chinese American: her grandparents and her great-grandfather were born in Toishan in the Guangdong Province of southern China, and emigrated to the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She self-identifies as Chinese American, as Asian American, and as multiethnic. Wong grew up on the East Coast and moved to Riverside in 1996. This project made her feel at home in Riverside, and she hopes it will inspire others to do similar research.
Much of the archival research for this site was done in 1999 by then-UCR undergraduates Eileen Bautista, Mary Delgado, and Christian Trajano. Trajano earned an M.A. in history from UCR, focusing on Filipino American issues.
