He is Professor Emeritus of Biology & Health Science at the Riverside Community College and is also a noted artist and tap dancer. Sam has been involved with the Coalition for Common Ground, a local non-profit community group dedicated to fostering better ethnic relations in Riverside. He has been recognized with the Sumi Harada Service Award from UCR's Asian Pacific Student Programs (2002) and with the Martin Luther King Award from the Martin Luther King Visionary group of Riverside (1996).
